Penryn Post Office Closing on November 27th

Mailbox Information for Residents Affected by the Penryn Post Office Closure

Penn Township has received several questions from residents regarding mailbox installation following the closure of the Penryn Post Office. If you are transitioning from a Penryn Post Office P.O. Box to home mail delivery, please contact the Post Office that will provide your mail delivery before installing a mailbox.

Contact the Post Office Before Installing a Mailbox

Depending on your address and established mail route, your mail may be delivered through the Manheim or Lititz Post Office. The Post Office must approve the location of your mailbox based on the carrier’s established mail route, accessibility, and delivery requirements. Please do not install a mailbox based solely on where you would like it located on your property. Even if a mailbox meets USPS construction standards, mail may not be delivered if the location has not been approved. You could be required to relocate the mailbox before delivery can begin.

Follow USPS Mailbox Installation Standards

After confirming the location with the appropriate Post Office, residents should follow current U.S. Postal Service mailbox installation standards. USPS generally requires curbside mailboxes to be:

  • Positioned 41–45 inches above the road surface to the bottom of the mailbox or point of mail entry.
  • Set back approximately 6–8 inches from the curb or road edge to the mailbox door.
  • Installed with an appropriate mailbox support.
  • Accessible to the mail carrier.

For complete requirements, please review the USPS Mailbox Installation Guidelines.

Call 811 Before You Dig

Before installing a mailbox post, contact Pennsylvania One Call by dialing 811 to have underground utilities located and marked.

Clearly Display Your Address

Please make sure your street address is clearly displayed and visible from the roadway. Clearly marked addresses are important for mail delivery and can help police, fire, ambulance, and other emergency responders quickly locate your property.

Penryn Fire Company offers green reflective 911 address markers to help make property addresses clearly visible from the roadway. Residents interested in obtaining a reflective address marker can stop by the Township Office during regular business hours, or print the form here. Residents of Penryn may bring the form and payment to the Township Office if no one is available at the fire house. There is a drop box for after-hours.

If you are unsure whether your property has an established street address, please contact Penn Township before labeling or installing your mailbox. Additional information regarding addressing will be provided as it becomes available.

Keep the Mailbox Area Clear

Penn Township Code prohibits vehicles from parking within 10 feet of a mailbox. Residents should also keep vegetation, snow, trash containers, and other obstructions away from mailboxes so carriers can safely access them. Please also consider snow removal and other roadway maintenance when installing and maintaining your mailbox.

Remember to Update Your Mailing Address

Residents transitioning from a P.O. Box to home delivery should update their mailing address with organizations that may still have the former P.O. Box on file. Property owners are encouraged to update their mailing address with the Lancaster County Property Assessment Office by completing the Property Assessment Address Change Form.

The form can also be found on the Lancaster County Property Assessment website.

Changing your address with USPS does not necessarily update your address with the County or other organizations.

Additional Information

Penn Township will update this information as additional details regarding the transition become available. Questions regarding mail delivery or mailbox location should be directed to the Post Office that will provide your mail delivery.
