Townships make up 45 of the top 50 spots for the safest “cities” in Pennsylvania in 2018. The list was compiled by the National Council for Home Safety and Security based on the most recent FBI uniform crime report statistics, population data, and internal research. Only communities with populations of at least 10,000 that have a local police department and submitted a complete crime report to the FBI were included on the list.
The council ranked the communities based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) per 1,000 people. These variables were then weighted with violent crimes accounting for
1.5 of the total, due to their severity compared to property crimes.
